The VL53L0X V1 is a compact Time-of-Flight laser-ranging sensor module designed for accurate, contactless distance and proximity measurement. Unlike conventional infrared sensors that estimate distance from reflected light intensity, the VL53L0X measures the travel time of an invisible infrared laser pulse, providing more consistent readings across objects with different colours and surface reflectivity.
The sensor incorporates STMicroelectronics FlightSense technology, a SPAD receiving array and a 940 nm invisible Class 1 VCSEL emitter. It can measure absolute distances up to approximately 2 metres under suitable operating conditions and communicates with microcontrollers through the I2C interface.
Its compact breakout-board design makes it suitable for Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi, STM32 and other embedded development platforms. The module is ideal for robot obstacle detection, proximity sensing, gesture-controlled systems, object detection, automatic dispensing, smart automation, level monitoring and educational electronics projects.
