7447 IC – BCD to 7-Segment Decoder / Driver IC for Common Anode Display

The 7447 IC is a BCD-to-7-segment decoder and driver designed to convert a 4-bit Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) input into the signals required to drive a common-anode 7-segment LED display.

It accepts a BCD number from 0 to 9 at its four input pins and automatically controls the seven display segments to show the corresponding decimal digit. This makes the 7447 useful in digital counters, clocks, scoreboards, frequency displays, digital meters, educational circuits and number display projects.

The 7447 belongs to the 74-series TTL logic family and is commonly available in a 16-pin DIP package, making it suitable for breadboards, IC sockets and through-hole PCB applications.

The outputs of the 7447 are designed for common-anode 7-segment displays and are typically active LOW with open-collector output stages. Suitable current-limiting resistors should be used with the LED display segments.

The IC also includes control functions such as Lamp Test, Ripple Blanking Input and Blanking Input / Ripple Blanking Output, which are useful in multi-digit display systems and leading-zero suppression applications.
