The 7406 Hex Inverter IC is a TTL digital logic device containing six independent inverter, or NOT-gate, circuits inside a single package. Each gate receives one digital input and produces the opposite logic state at its output.
When the input is LOW, the corresponding output transistor turns off. When the input is HIGH, the output transistor pulls the output LOW. Because the outputs are open collector, each output requires an external pull-up resistor to generate a valid HIGH level.
The 7406 is especially useful for interfacing standard TTL logic with higher-voltage circuits. Its open-collector outputs can be connected to an external pull-up voltage, allowing the IC to control suitable loads or communicate with circuits that use different logic levels. The SN7406 family supports open-collector output voltages of up to approximately 30V, subject to the manufacturer’s operating conditions.
This IC is commonly used for signal inversion, logic-level interfacing, LED control, relay-driver stages, lamp-control circuits, wired-logic connections and digital electronics projects. A suitable external transistor or driver may still be required for loads that exceed the IC’s output-current rating.
The standard 14-pin DIP through-hole package is easy to install on breadboards, IC sockets, prototype boards and printed circuit boards. It is suitable for students, hobbyists, technicians and electronic circuit developers.
Product identification note: The standard part is generally designated 7406, SN7406 or 74LS06, depending on the manufacturer and logic family. “LM7406” may be used informally by some sellers, but buyers should verify the exact marking printed on the supplied IC.
