The 10mm Infrared Slot Photoelectric Count Sensor Module with Encoder Wheel is a compact optical sensing kit designed for object counting, rotational-speed measurement, motor-speed detection and position-monitoring projects.

The module uses a slotted infrared optocoupler containing an infrared transmitter and photodetector positioned opposite each other. When the supplied slotted encoder wheel rotates through the sensor gap, its solid sections block the infrared beam while its openings allow the beam to pass. These repeated interruptions generate digital pulses that can be counted by a microcontroller.

The sensor provides a slot width of approximately 10mm, allowing the included encoder wheel or another suitable interrupting object to pass through the sensing area. It is commonly used with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, Raspberry Pi GPIO and other digital-control platforms.

An onboard comparator circuit converts the optical signal into a clean digital output. The module commonly includes an adjustable potentiometer for setting the switching sensitivity and an indicator LED for displaying the output state.

By counting the number of output pulses over a measured time, the controller can determine rotation count, relative speed or RPM. The calculated result depends on the number of slots in the encoder wheel and the number of pulses detected during each revolution.
